Do you have a bike in need of a tyre change? Or some clothes in desperate need of patching? Don’t leave them lying around or throw them out to go into landfill.
The intention of our Repair Cafe is to create a space where community members can meet to repair items such as furniture, clothing, electrical items and bicycles to teach individuals the importance of living sustainably through repairing and reusing. By promoting repairs, our aim is to reduce the amount of items going into landfill each year. Our experts will take the time to explain the repair process with participants in order for individuals to learn these repair skills.
Starting from 10am and ending at 1pm, various volunteer experts will be on hand to assist and share their knowledge free of charge. Donations will be warmly welcomed to help us with ongoing costs. Repairs will depend on the skill set of the volunteers that are available and will vary each month. The Adelaide Community Bicycle Workshop repairs bicycles every Saturday and will be available while the Repair Cafe is operating.
The Repair Cafe concept arose in the Netherlands in 2009, and was formulated by Martine Postma. In 2010, she started the Repair Cafe Foundation which aims to provide support to local groups around the world wishing to start their own cafe. The Repair Cafe’s aim is to pass on valuable practical knowledge to save things from getting thrown away. There are now a total of 1,400 repair cafes worldwide.
The Adelaide Repair Cafe is supported by the Government of South Australia.
